The history of Playbox

1995 - 2020


The 1990s

Playbox was established in 1995 by Per-Erik Jonsson. As a modern wholesaler, Playbox had a permanent showroom in Solna outside Stockholm, where customers could come down, look around, get inspired and order toys. The goods were then ordered from China. Using a scanner system, Playbox could be transparent in their pricing and provide quotes on the spot, which was something that customers truly appreciated.

The Playbox office was located in Häradsbäck, Småland. Between 1995 and 1996, Playbox also had a warehouse in Gothenburg. In 1997, this warehouse was relocated to Hallaryd in Småland. 

The 2000s

Playbox has always kept up to date with and adapted to new developments. We were quick to get involved with ironing beads which were popular and sold very well. As a result, we have focused on the craft segment since 2002.
Today, we have a wide range of materials for all kinds of crafts. Our biggest seller is ironing beads manufactured in Sweden. We are constantly working to develop and increase our range of environmentally friendly products.

The showroom in Solna was closed down in 2002 as Playbox began to focus more specifically on crafts.

The 2010s

By 2012, Playbox had grown so much that we were now in need of a larger warehouse. Our headquarters and warehouse were moved to Älmhult in Småland, where we even manufacture our products. We also have an office in Stockholm.

As of 2014, we are also present in China through our wholly owned subsidiary Pulebo

The 2020s

Playbox’s products are today sold in over 30 countries with Sweden and Germany being the biggest markets. We sell products to school distributors, retailers and directly to end customers.

We dare to take responsibility for the environment and work continuously to improve our environmental profile. For example, Playbox was the first producer in the world to manufacture ironing beads from sugar cane. A fact that we take great pride in. We are currently looking into whether we can make our operations even more environmentally friendly, possibly by manufacturing beads from another eco-friendly material.
